Long Lost Memories
In 1924 England, amidst a grand estate stood a magnificent mansion. Although the grandeur of the Victorian era's aristocracy was slowly fading, tonight was an exception. The masquerade ball hosted by Lord Robert was a dazzling affair, reminiscent of a bygone era of splendour.
Lord Robert Montague had dedicated his life to preserving the mansion that had been passed down through his family and upholding the honour of the Montague name. His father was born in the Victorian era, and his mother was raised during the reign of Edward VII. Robert himself inherited this legacy, striving to ensure the prosperity of the Montague family.
However, 1924 was a year of change, and all of Britain was being swept by the tides of a new era. The scars of the Great War ran deep, leaving the entire nation to grapple with its aftermath. The aristocracy was no exception, facing post-war economic hardships and new taxation. The death duties, in particular, presented a harsh reality for many nobles, including Robert. To maintain their vast estates, they were forced to sell off lands and properties one after another.
That night, the mansion's chandelier gleamed with a vestige of its former opulence, as masked guests gathered within. As the host, Robert greeted each of the attendees. Beside him stood his fiancée, Miss Elizabeth, adorned in a blue gown. Elizabeth, though resplendent, carried an air of modesty, her very presence a source of comfort to Robert.
"Robert, shall we dance?" Elizabeth asked, drawing close with a gentle smile.
"I find myself burdened tonight," Robert replied. "Recent events have been weighing heavily on my mind."
Elizabeth looked at him with concern. "Is it the Labour Party taking power?"
"Indeed," Robert nodded slightly. "Our time may be nearing its end. The power of the aristocracy is waning, and the future has become uncertain. With the Labour Party in control, we can expect even stricter taxes on our class. It will be harder than ever to protect the home that has been in my family for generations."
"But you've always protected your family and home. We have that strength," Elizabeth said, taking his hand gently.
"Thank you, Elizabeth." Robert squeezed her hand in return, feeling his spirits lift slightly. "You always give me courage."
